Pg. 28 of Discovering Jesus in the Holy Eucharist through the Bible, the Catechsim, and the Saints

St. Josemaría Escrivá (20th century)

“‘Now before the feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end’ [John 13:1]. The reader of this verse from St. John’s Gospel is brought to understand that a great event is about to take place” (Christ Is Passing By: Homilies, p. 193).

Reflection

The above verse follows chapter 12 of the book of John with the triumphant entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. The excitement the disciples experienced from the crowd seemed to be dampened when Jesus became troubled when he announced that his hour of glory was approaching (John 12:20-50). Why would receiving glory trouble anyone? Something was about to happen that was hard to understand.

Prayer

Jesus, help us to listen to and understand your teachings. Although I am human, let me think as God might and not as humans do (Matthew 16:23).

Journaling Prompt

What is Jesus saying to me here, and what do I want to say to him?
