Today I offer another freebie of my devotional/prayer journal. If you attend daily Mass, you may have noticed that the Gospel reading has been coming from the Bread of Life Discourse from the book of John, chapter 6. Since about one fifth of my devotional/prayer journal focuses on this subject, I am sharing a page on The Bread of Life Discourse. I hope you enjoy it.
Discovering Jesus in the Holy Eucharist through the Bible, the Catechism, and the Saints
By Cynthia Brewer
Scripture: The Bread of Life Discourse
“Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst’”
(John 6:35).
Reflection:
Here again, Jesus is not speaking of physical needs. We all get hungry when we fast or when it’s almost suppertime, but that is not the hunger and thirst about which Jesus is speaking. He is communicating in spiritual terms: he wants us to crave him, his teachings, and his way. We will only be satisfied when we fully commit to Jesus. This will require more than only fulfilling our Sunday Mass obligation. When we fall in love, would we be happy with seeing our beloved only once a week?
Prayer:
Lord, you are calling me to a deeper relationship—one in which I will be fully and spiritually satisfied. Help me, Jesus, to realize that I will never be satisfied outside of you.
Journaling Prompt:
What is Jesus saying to me here, and what do I want to say to him?
