It Is Finished!

Cynthia (Cindy) Brewer

Scripture: Last Supper Verses

“Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and said, ‘Take this and share it among yourselves; for I tell you [that] from this time on I shall not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes’”

(Luke 22:17-18).

Reflection:

Dr. Scott Hahn suggests that Passover ends and the kingdom of God comes when Jesus once again drinks of the fruit of the vine. At the climax of Jesus’ agony on the cross, he cries out, “I thirst” (John 19:28). In response, a soldier offers him a sponge soaked in common wine. After taking it, Jesus cries out, “It is finished,” and then dies. What is finished is the Passover, for he had taken of the fourth and final Passover cup, the Cup of Consummation, or Acceptance.[1]

Prayer:

Jesus, you thirsted to do the will of your Father; increase my desire to do God’s will over my own.

Journaling Prompt:

What is Jesus saying to me here, and what do I want to say to him?

Scripture: Last Supper Verses

“‘I tell you, from now on I shall not drink this fruit of the vine until the day when I drink it with you new in the kingdom of my Father.’ Then, after singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives”

(Matt 26:29-30).

Reflection:

Author and theologian Dr. Scott Hahn suggests that the kingdom of the Father arrived following Jesus’ cry from the cross, “I thirst,” and after he sipped of the wine from the sprig of hyssop. Once this happened, he said, “It is finished” (John 19:28-29) and died. This signifies the “Cup of Consummation,” the fourth and final cup of the Passover, making Christ’s sacrificial death the fulfillment of the New Covenant—the new Passover.[1]

Prayer:

Jesus, please help me to realize that your Father’s kingdom reigns now. Satan has no power over those who believe and are living actively in God’s Kingdom on earth.
