The Messiah, your Redeemer, is Here!

Today, in the Catholic Church, it is the Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord.

It is the day that we celebrate the announcement of the coming of the Messiah by the Archangel Gabriel. He came to the Virgin Mary proclaiming that she would become the mother of the Messiah, who had been promised to save Israel.

We celebrate this great feast today, March 25, because it is nine (9) months before December 25, Christmas Day, the day we celebrate the birth of the Messiah.

We are grateful that Mary said Yes to God.

The first reading in the Mass comes from Isaiah 7:10-14; 8:10, the prophecy that the Virgin would be with child and bear a son. The child would be named Emmanuel, meaning “God is with us!”

We next read from Psalm 40, “Here I am, Lord; I come to do your will.” Both Mary and the son of God, Jesus, came to do the will of God. We are to imitate them.

The second reading is from Hebrews 10:4-10. It reminds us that the blood sacrifices of bulls and goats, offered according to the Old Testament law, cannot take away sin. God prepared a body for his son, Jesus Christ, which would be the once for all eternal sacrifice to take away our sins.

The Gospel comes from Luke 1:26-38, where the Angel Gabriel appears to the Virgin Mary who was betrothed to a man named Joseph of the Galilean town of Nazareth. Gabriel proclaims that Mary is “full of grace” and that the Lord is with her. She is to give birth to the Messiah. Mary responds, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.”

Let us pray the prayer said after Communion today : “Confirm in our minds the mysteries of the true faith, we pray, O Lord, so that, confessing that he who was conceived of the Virgin Mary is true God and true man, we may through the saving power of his Resurrection, merit to attain eternal joy.

Through Christ our Lord. Amen” (The Prayer after Communion).

Let this be our prayer as we daily await the second coming of our Lord, Jesus.
