What’s in a name?

By Cynthia Brewer

The first person to utter a curse using the LORD’s name, was, after Moses conferred with the Lord, stoned to death by the community as punishment (Leviticus 24: 10-16). That is the seriousness of using God’s name in vain, as blasphemy.

Today, many only hear the name of Jesus or God as a swear word. This is heartbreaking. People just don’t understand.

In The Wonders of the Holy Name, Fr. Paul O’Sullivan, O.P. (E.D.M.) reveals how we can obtain holiness and happiness in developing a love for Jesus’ name.

In this little book, Fr. O’ Sullivan explains that if we lovingly say “Jesus,” we offer the infinite love of Jesus to God, His Father. His Holy Name saves us from evils and delivers us from the power of the devil, he continues.

We can restore the love the name of Jesus deserves by lovingly repeating this name in prayer, “Jesus, Jesus, Jesus.” By doing so, we make amends for the pain caused to the heart of Jesus.

Fr. O Sullivan says that repeating Jesus’ name lovingly will gradually fill our souls with a peace and a joy it’s never experienced.

He reminds us of St. Paul’s words “And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus …” (Col. 3:17).

The remainder of the book shows through historical events the power found in the name of Jesus.

Most important for our times is how the name of Jesus saved the country of Portugal from a plague in 1432. Seeing that the sickness was growing and spreading fiercely, the bishop of Lisbon, Monsignor André Dias, urged everyone to call on the Holy Name of Jesus for help and healing.

“Repeat ‘Jesus, Jesus,’” Msgr. Dias said. “Write it on cards, and keep those cards on your persons; place them at night under your pillows; place them on your doors; and above all constantly invoke with your lips and in your hearts this most powerful Name.”

As the news spread and the people throughout the country began to call on the name of Jesus, in an incredibly short time, the plague left Portugal.

Now that the world is contending with the Delta Variant of COVID 19, I ask everyone to call on the one sure way to end this plague. Repeat lovingly, “Jesus, Jesus, Jesus.”
